Christmas on the other Side of the World

Hello there!

Merry Christmas everyone.
You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout I'm telling you why, Santa Claus is coming to town!
This song is stuck in my head for days. There are several other songs too, but this one in particular. Americans are better at creating a Christmas mood than Germans. In Germany it was hard for me to realize that it was Christmas every year, it just always seemed like a normal day. Here they put on lights in front of their houses like crazy, sing songs, bake cookies and just put you into the right mood. Apart from that Christmas here wasn't very different than in Germany, you had a decorated tree, a nice dinner and spent time with your family. But in Germany you celebrate Christmas Eve (24th), and here it's Christmas Day (25th). My host family thought it was weird that we would exchange presents after supper, because here they do it in the morning, sometimes even before breakfast.

They say you are the most homesick during the holidays.
And I wouldn't necessarily say so. I mean of course I would've wanted to see my family and spent time with them during Christmas, but it wasn't really a problem not to, for this one. My family was never such a big Christmas celebrating family, we would always keep it rather simple, and it's a good part of the whole experience here. So one nice skype conversation on Christmas Eve was fine for me. Of course it also depends on how well you feel in your family, and luckily I feel really well in my current one. In my first family for example, I would've been homesick like crazy because it didn't feel like home.

So even though my host mum had a headache in the morning, Christmas on the other side of the world was a nice experience. The days after Christmas we went to Des Moines to visit some relatives and on the 30th and 31st I will be in Chicago! Yay! (Blogpost alert!)

Stay tuned!

Bye
