Thousands
of layers, cozy blankets and a lot of hot chocolate, that is the
Iowan Winter.
"Hop
in the sleigh
And we'll glide away
Into the night
And we'll sip on moonlight
Runny nose
My frosty toes
Are getting cold but I feel alive
So I smile wide."
When
it first began to get colder and I would say a word of complaint
about it, everyone around me would be saying: “Just wait for the
real winter to arrive”. They told me horror stories about last
winter, that was so outstandingly cold that it got -50° Fahrenheit.
At that time I was still laughing about it, joking that I didn't come
to Alaska so it would probably be fine. But oh no. The “real”
winter arrived. It got cold, I tell you, already in November. The
worst it ever got until now was -27° Celsius though, so Iowans were
happy about it, and they would seriously still go out without a coat,
some even in shorts! They're crazy, I tell you! People in Germany
freak out when it get's -5° Celsius or so.
Everyday when we would wait for the bus to arrive in the morning, it felt like my feet, hands and my butt would die, I'm not kidding. But as time passed, we learned to adapt. We would pack ourselves into layers and layers, and peel ourselves off when we arrived in school. I told my parents to send me the Uggs that I didn't wear in years, and when they arrived it was like walking on heaven. I had leggings under my jeans, and at least two sweaters under my coat, and when the face was the only spot that wasn't covered in something, I would crave for one of those ridiculous Ninja Masks people use. You seriously don't care anymore how you look, you just somehow prevent yourself from dying. Here is a beautiful picture that shows exactly how me and El felt everyday:

However,
Iowan weather changes like people's mood.
On one day it's 19° Celsius and the next day it gets -15°. On the other day it's -20° Celsius and the next day it's 2°. It literally changes every single day. So while our November was awful, our December was alright. Our January had some tough weeks, but all in all it was endurable. February started right off with a snowday (That's the best thing about winter, all the snowdays and late starts at school) and that snowday was the most beautiful day ever. The day before, it was raining because it was relatively warm. That way all the naked trees were wet, and when it started snowing, it all stuck on top of the tree branches. Everything was white and covered in snow, it was just gorgeous. Even I then had to admit how pretty it was. So I went outside to take pictures and my hands nearly died. But the best thing: I even saw a wild deer.
